The renovation of the CLB Science Building at Johnson County Community College consisted of infilling two floors to increase laboratory space within the existing building. With this infill, a new vision for the exterior of the building was created. The infilled floors were enclosed with a metal panel system that not only filled the previously voided spaces but wrapped the façade to create a unified design.
The metal panels themselves were inspired by the existing brick both in varied color and by offset patterning. Each individual metal panel was a consistent width - much like the existing brick. This patterning also allowed for punched openings on the façade to be based on where the labs needed openings - allowing for the function of the building to maintain importance and for the expression of the function of the building to the exterior. This function-based exterior envelope gives the CLB building unique characteristics, and its own individual DNA.
